Roberta Kray: The Debt: A Novel of the London Underworld

The Debt: A Novel of the London Underworld

Description

After eighteen years inside, Johnny Frank is coming out of jail with just one thing on his mind, to kill the man who put him there. But his plans soon go dramatically awry. As his past returns to haunt him, a vicious murder and kidnap force him back on the streets of London. He could choose simply to disappear - if it weren't for Simone. Through her marriage to Reggie Kray, the author has a unique insight into the inner conflicts of a long-term prisoner, and just as Roberta's life was irrevocably changed by meeting Reg, so Simone's will never be the same again after she enters Johnny's dangerous and unpredictable universe. Praise for Roberta Kray: 'Well into Martina Cole territory, Roberta Kray's first novel gets under the skin of the London underworld with no problem' - Independent 'Action, intrigue and a character-driven plot are delivered in well-written style, sure to please any crime fiction fans' - Woman 'You might expect a crime novel written by the widow of Reg Kray would be tough - and it is. Recommend this to fans of Ian Rankin' - Booklist 'The Debt convinces on every page - not only about the gangster world but also as a portrait of a woman whose life has been changed by forces beyond her control' - Chicago Tribune

The Past Holds Terrors... There are secrets buried at Maidenwood--dark secrets that span generations. Medical student Julie Newcomb, who once spent four miserable childhood years at this rundown Virginia plantation, would rather not resurrect ancient memories, or face her own fears. Reluctantly, Julie agrees, praying that life at Maidenwood will not be as bleak as before. From the first, though, Julie finds Maidenwood a haunted place, not merely echoing with grim reminders, but filled with dark secrets that will become part of her life even today.

Arthritis Reversed: 30 Days to Lasting Relief from Joint Pain and Arthritis

Description

Dr. Mark Wiley has spent decades researching and mastering natural wellness practices around the world. He's taken those techniques and pioneered a powerful, integrated mind/body approach to arthritis relief and prevention. Simply put, mainstream medicine fails to eradicate our everyday pains, illnesses and diseases. It fails because it is passive and reactionary and thus it is unable to prevent you from experiencing chronic health conditions. The important thing is to see and know that the solution to your daily suffering is grounded in a five-part process called, the Arthritis Relief Action Plan: Part 1: Educate yourself about the real causes and solutions of arthritis Part 2: Reduce the current level of symptoms you are experiencing Part 3: Halt or significantly reduce the worsening of your condition Part 4: Prevent the symptoms from flaring to improve your quality of life Part 5: Regenerate healthy tissue to reverse the damage done In the pages of Arthritis Reversed, Dr. Wiley shows you how to determine the underlying-and sometimes hidden-causes of your arthritic symptoms. These are actually obvious root causes and contributors that are only "hidden" because you have not (yet) been taught to look for and identify them. Dr. Wiley shows you how to do this and then how to use that knowledge to reduce your pain and halt or slow the progression of the condition, typically within 30 to 90 days.

Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew are eager for some floral fun but first they ll have to find the missing flowers! Jane Whitefield is a Native American guide who leads solitary outcasts through hostile territory to escape the vengeance of their enemies. But the shaded forest paths her Seneca ancestors might have followed on such missions have all been converted to superhighways, and now the safest way stations are crowded urban buildings that offer the camouflage of anonymity. Still, the supply of runaways - and the need for a woman who will take risks to save them - have never been greater. Jane knows all the tricks; in fact, she has invented several of them herself in the ten years she has been teaching fugitives to live with new identities. Many of her clients have been innocent people whom the institutions of society have been too slow and cumbersome to protect, but an increasing number have been like the gambler Harry Kemple: people who aren't especially admirable, Arthritis Reversed: 30 Days to Lasting Relief from Joint Pain and Arthritis download PDF but who aren't bad enough to deserve to die prematurely. Jane opens her door to find in her house an uninvited visitor named John Felker, the latest to run to her for sanctuary. He was sent, he says, by the long-vanished Harry: "He knew I was in trouble. He told me that if I needed to disappear, there was a door out of the world. He told me that this is where it was." Felker is not like the others Jane has helped, and everything about him is disquieting. He doesn't even know whom he is running from, only that whoever is framing him as an embezzler has already circulated an open contract in the prison system for his death. Maybe his problems began years ago, when he was a policeman; a good cop makes an enemy with each arrest. But perhaps he is still a policeman and has invented precisely the right story to entrap Jane. Or perhaps heis something even worse. The unexpected guest draws this exceptional woman into an adventure of mystery, love and sacrifice, betrayal and vengeance, and propels her on a pursuit that takes her from the night streets of Los Angeles and Vancouver to the dark, unexplored regions of h

This Moose Belongs to Me

Description

From the illustrator of the #1 smash hit "The Day the Crayons Quit "comes the age-old tale of a boy and his moose . . . Wilfred is a boy with rules. He lives a very orderly life. It's fortunate, then, that he has a pet who abides by rules, such as not making noise while Wilfred educates him on his record collection. There is, however, one rule that Wilfred's pet has difficulty following: Going whichever way Wilfred wants to go. Perhaps this is because Wilfred's pet doesn't quite realize that he belongs to anyone. A moose can be obstinate in such ways. Fortunately, the two manage to work out a compromise. Let's just say it involves apples. Oliver Jeffers, the bestselling creator of "Stuck" and "The Incredible Book Eating Boy," delivers another deceptively simple book sure to make kids giggle.

Robert Kaplan: The Nothing That is: A Natural History of Zero

The Nothing That is: A Natural History of Zero

Description

A symbol for what is not there, an emptiness that increases any number it's added to, an inexhaustible and indispensable paradox. As we enter the year 2000, zero is once again making its presence felt. Nothing itself, it makes possible a myriad of calculations. Indeed, without zero mathematics as we know it would not exist. And without mathematics our understanding of the universe would be vastly impoverished. But where did this nothing, this hollow circle, come from? Who created it? And what, exactly, does it mean? Robert Kaplan's The Nothing That Is: A Natural History of Zero begins as a mystery story, taking us back to Sumerian times, and then to Greece and India, piecing together the way the idea of a symbol for nothing evolved. Kaplan shows us just how handicapped our ancestors were in trying to figure large sums without the aid of the zero. (Try multiplying CLXIV by XXIV). Remarkably, even the Greeks, mathematically brilliant as they were, didn't have a zero--or did they? We follow the trail to the East where, a millennium or two ago, Indian mathematicians took another crucial step. By treating zero for the first time like any other number, instead of a unique symbol, they allowed huge new leaps forward in computation, and also in our understanding of how mathematics itself works. In the Middle Ages, this mathematical knowledge swept across western Europe via Arab traders. At first it was called "dangerous Saracen magic" and considered the Devil's work, but it wasn't long before merchants and bankers saw how handy this magic was, and used it to develop tools like double-entry bookkeeping. Zero quickly became an essential part of increasingly sophisticated equations, and with the invention of calculus, one could say it was a linchpin of the scientific revolution. And now even deeper layers of this thing that is nothing are coming to light: our computers speak only in zeros and ones, and modern mathematics shows that zero alone can be made to generate everything. Robert Kaplan serves up all this history with immense zest and humor; his writing is full of anecdotes and asides, and quotations from Shakespeare to Wallace Stevens extend the book's context far beyond the scope of scientific specialists. For Kaplan, the history of zero is a lens for looking not only into the evolution of mathematics but into very nature of human thought. He points out how the history of mathematics is a process of recursive abstraction: how once a symbol is created to represent an idea, that symbol itself gives rise to new operations that in turn lead to new ideas. The beauty of mathematics is that even though we invent it, we seem to be discovering something that already exists. The joy of that discovery shines from Kaplan's pages, as he ranges from Archimedes to Einstein, making fascinating connections between mathematical insights from every age and culture. A tour de force of science history, The Nothing That Is takes us through the hollow circle that leads to infinity.

When Little Golden Books launched in 1942 at 25 cents each, they changed publishing history. For the first time, children's books were high quality, delightfully illustrated, low-priced and available to almost all children, not just a privileged few. Over the years the offerings have grown to include a host of beloved characters drawn from literature, fairy tales, television and popular culture. The "Pharmako" series includes the predecessor volumes "Pharmako/Poeia" (which covers tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, opiates, salvia divinorum, and other substances) and "Pharmako/Dynamis" (focusing on stimulants and empathogens)." Your life sucks if... The girl who has spent her life running is about to be caught... by love Plotinus (204/5-270 CE) was the first and greatest of Neoplatonic philosophers. His writings were edited by his disciple Porphyry, who published them many years after his master's death in six sets of nine treatises each (the Enneads). Plotinus regarded Plato as his master, and his own philosophy is a profoundly original development The Nothing That is: A Natural History of Zero download PDF of the Platonism of the first two centuries of the Christian era and the closely related thought of the Neopythagoreans, with some influences from Aristotle and his followers and the Stoics, whose writings he knew well but used critically. He is a unique combination of mystic and Hellenic rationalist. His thought dominated later Greek philosophy and influenced both Christians and Moslems, and is still alive today because of its union of rationality and intense religious experience. In his acclaimed edition of Plotinus, Armstrong provides excellent introductions to each treatise. His invaluable notes explain obscure passages and give reference to parallels in Plotinus and others.

Patricia Cornwell: Postmortem

Postmortem

Description

A serial killer is on the loose in Richmond, Virginia. Three women have died, brutalised and strangled in their own bedroom. There is no pattern: the killer appears to strike at random - but always early on Saturday mornings. So when Dr Kay Scarpetta, chief medical officer, is awakened at 2.33 am, she knows the news is bad: there is a fourth victim. And she fears now for those that will follow unless she can dig up new forensic evidence to aid the police. But not everyone is pleased to see a woman in this powerful job. Someone may even want to ruin her career and reputation ...

Since he was little, Chihiro has felt an unusual emotional connection to zombie movies. It's not that he feels bad for the survivors - instead he fantasizes about comforting the poor undead girls they slaughter! When his beloved pet passes away, he decides to brew up a resurrection potion in secret. But he's discovered by popular girl and local heiress Sanka Rea, whose life isn't as perfect as it seems - and Chihiro suggests that she could serve as a test subject! She eventually warms to the idea - maybe becoming a zombie might be just the change she needs! Very simply, a virtue (or vice) is acquired through practice--repeated activity that increases our proficiency at the activity and gradually forms our character. . . . We often need external incentives and sanctions to get us through the initial stages of the process, when our old, entrenched desires still pull us toward the opposite behavior. But with encouragement, discipline, and often a role model or mentor, practice can make things feel more natural and enjoyable as we gradually develop the internal values and desires corresponding to our outward behavior. Virtue often develops, that is, from the outside-in. This is why, when we want to re-form our character from Postmortem pdf vice to virtue, we often need to practice and persevere in regular spiritual disciplines and formational practices for a lengthy period of time.

Searle: Construction Social Reality _p

Construction Social Reality _p

Description

This short treatise looks at how we construct a social reality from our sense impressions; at how, for example, we construct a five-pound note with all that implies in terms of value and social meaning, from the printed piece of paper we see and touch. In The Construction of Social Reality, eminent philosopher John Searle examines the structure of social reality (or those portions of the world that are facts only by human agreement, such as money, marriage, property, and government), and contrasts it to a brute reality that is independent of human agreement. Searle shows that brute reality provides the indisputable foundation for all social reality, and that social reality, while very real, is maintained by nothing more than custom and habit."
